Classes

How do I find a class?

Go to the list on the right and click on a location of interest. A list of available classes will display for each location. Choose one of the classes in the monthly schedule. This class will meet at the same time and place for the duration of the beginner course.

You are welcome to drop by and watch a class anytime they are offered. Many locations host regular open houses and off-site demos. Contact your local branch to inquire about what is available.

What is involved in learning the Taoist Tai Chi® internal art of taijiquan?

Our beginner classes offer a friendly environment in which to learn this health improving art. You do not have to be in great physical shape to start learning–these arts and methods can be practiced by people of almost all ages and conditions.

At a beginners’ class you will be progressively shown the moves of the ‘set’. One of our accredited volunteer instructors will demonstrate each move and give you guidance on how to perform them. Within 3-4 months of weekly or bi-weekly classes, you will learn all the 108 moves of the set.

How much does it cost?

Instruction is offered on a membership basis rather than as a fee-for-service. When you become a member of the Society you are entitled to attend any classes or practices. Membership dues are payable monthly or annually. They are used to pay the operating costs of the Society—mainly rent, utilities, etc.

Visit the fees page for the details.

How do I register?

To register, arrive fifteen minutes early on the first day of your class. Fill out a registration form. Payment and membership dues are required by the second class. You can also pre-register anytime a club site is open.

What should I wear to class?

Wear loose-fitting comfortable clothing that allows free range of movement. We recommend indoor shoes with little or no heel. No bare feet please.

Is there any help outside of my regular class?

Some locations offer weekend beginner practice sessions with a an instructor available to help review what you have learned or teach you a move that you missed. Consult your local Class Schedule for this information. Practice sessions are helpful if you miss a class. As well, many locations start more than one class each month on different days. You can often attend another night if you missed one of your regular classes.

What happens after I complete the beginner class?

Learning Taoist Tai Chi® internal arts and methods is a life-long process in which the student discovers many layers of development. After completing the beginner course, 'continuing classes' offer ongoing opportunities for more intensive practice, refinement and further learning. Continuing classes are listed separately in the class schedule for each location.

There are also regular workshops in Taoist Tai Chi® internal arts and methods, including meditation and Lok Hup Ba Fa (another set of movements like taijiquan).
